Chapter 31
Chapter 31
Zhao Tiegang was stunned: "I suddenly realize that what you said makes sense."
“That’s for sure. Third Uncle, go back and drink your wine, don’t meddle in other people’s business.” Zhao Da’e shrugged: “I’m planning to have a fight with your wife in a little while.”
"Did your third aunt offend you?"
"What are you thinking, Third Uncle? I'm doing this for your own good," Zhao Da'e said. "Third Uncle, your wife is faking illness all the time. How are you going to manage? She hasn't just been faking it for a day or two; she's been doing it for years. What kind of family do you have? She drinks herbal medicine every day? Even if she wasn't sick before, she's made herself sick now. What kind of decent person drinks herbal medicine every day? Is she addicted to medicine or something?"
Zhao Tiegang: "Uh... but we can't fight with your third aunt."
"What do you know? Last time your wife heard that your brother-in-law was getting married, she walked all the way from our village back to Xidi Village. It's over 20 kilometers, including a steep slope, and she was perfectly fine. The problem is, she didn't bring enough money, so she had to come back. She made two round trips in two days. Putting everything else aside, it's not an exaggeration to say that my third aunt is Wang Junxia's senior. She's incredibly strong."
Look at my third aunt, her face is all fleshy, she's all fat, and she waddles when she walks. With that kind of build, how could she be sick?
Zhao Tiegang explained, "Your third aunt has back pain and a heart condition."
"Don't listen to her nonsense. I can cure her back pain in one go. Third Uncle, you'd better go back and drink your wine. My Third Aunt sent you out here just to fight me, didn't she?" Zhao Da'e pouted. "But I know that my Third Uncle is a bit of a coward... soft-hearted. Yes, Third Uncle, you're soft-hearted, so you're unlikely to fight me."
Zhao Tiegang, still dazed, said, "Then I'll go back. It's not that I don't want you to burn this wood. Your grandfather won't allow it either. But we really don't have any firewood at home, so you can burn it. I'll go out and chop a cartload another day."
"Alright, stop bragging. Go back to drinking. From the day I was born, you swore you'd chop several cartloads of firewood for the family. I'm six years old now, and I haven't even seen you chop a single stick."
Zhao Tiegang looked embarrassed, and then obediently went back.
A short while later, the sound of a child crying came from inside the house again.
Zhao Da'e muttered to himself: I can't hear you, I can't hear you. Anyway, I wasn't the one who got beaten. Zhao Yongbo got beaten up without any grievance, since my third aunt can only beat up kids.
Zhao Da'e then continued chopping wood, and soon he had chopped it neatly, brought it back to the house, and started a fire.
After a while, the room warmed up a bit, and Zhao Da'e put on his newly bought cotton-padded coat, a pink cotton-padded coat, a pink cotton-padded trousers, and finally a pair of pink snow boots.
Finally, he put on a pink hat and went out again. He found his father, Zhao Tiesheng, and said, "Dad, go and do something important."
Seeing that Zhao D'e looked alright and seemed to have calmed down, Zhao Tiesheng asked, "What's wrong?"
“Go to my uncle’s house. He’s hardworking. There’s a pile of timber in his backyard that’s almost as tall as a house. Go to his house and bring back a cartload of timber.”
Zhao Tiesheng was stunned: "Going all the way to your uncle's house to get firewood? That's so far, aren't you afraid the villagers will laugh at you for borrowing firewood?"
Zhao Da'e rolled his eyes: "You know that going out to borrow firewood would make people laugh, so why haven't you been home these past few days to go out and chop some firewood? Are there jackals, tigers, leopards, or poisonous snakes and wild beasts on the mountain? Are you going to let my mother have a cold bed during her postpartum period?"
"These past two days..." Zhao Tiesheng was about to explain.
Zhao Da'e refused to listen to Zhao Tiesheng's nonsense: "Don't explain. The more you explain, the more confusing it becomes. Besides, I don't believe you. Go chop some firewood now, there's still a long time before dark, hurry up. If you don't go now, I'll burn down the wooden fence my grandma used to fence off her garden. You don't want my grandma to get up and curse after she's already broken her leg, do you?!"
