Chapter 11 Wen Zisong's Scheme
Chapter 11 Wen Zisong's Scheme
Wen Yunhong scurried around the backyard on his short legs, his face covered in sweat from worry. The sheep he had painstakingly carried down from the mountain the night before were gone.
"Sister, boohoo, the sheep, boohoo, the sheep is gone!" He cried all the way back to the room, only to find his sister still lying calmly on the kang (a heated brick bed). The little guy panicked, crying and shaking Wen Yuxia's hand.
Wen Yuxia calmly put on her coat and said, "Don't cry, I've sent the sheep to my maternal grandparents' house."
"Yes, yes, let Grandma raise them for us," Wen Yunhong wiped away her tears hastily. At least the sheep weren't lost; it would be safer at her grandparents' house.
"What? The sheep were sent to Xiaowang Village?" Wen Linshi had just reached the door when she overheard the conversation between Wen Yuxia and her brother. She shouted angrily.
Wen Dashan also became anxious and strode into the house, saying to Wen Yuxia, "Your maternal grandparents' family is dirt poor. Why did you take the sheep there? Quick, go and bring them back!"
Xiaowang Village was once a wasteland. Ten years ago, members of the Wang clan who fled famine settled there, and that's how Xiaowang Village came to be today.
Wen Yuxia's maternal grandmother was incredibly fertile, giving birth to a daughter and then eight children. The eldest daughter became Wen Yuxia's mother.
Back then, the Wang family misappropriated their eldest daughter's betrothal gifts to marry off their eldest son, leaving their eldest daughter to marry into the Wen family with only two old clothes.
Wen Lin was furious and forbade Wang from returning to her parents' home. Whenever Wang's family came to visit, Wen Lin would make sarcastic and veiled insults in the courtyard.
Thinking that the Wang family still had seven unmarried sons, Wen Dashan was afraid that the Wang family would take the goat to sell and use the money to marry off their sons, so he kept urging Wen Yuxia to go to the Wang family to take the goat.
Wen Yuxia said straightforwardly, "No, I've already told my uncles to take good care of the goat, and I'll give them half of the lambs when they're born."
Wen Zisong and the others, who had been listening in the courtyard, could no longer remain still. Wen Zisong walked in with a dark face and said coldly, "Da Ya, don't forget, your surname is Wen, not Wang."
"My surname is Wen, and my given name is Yuxia. I remember it clearly, how could I forget?" Wen Yuxia said with a grin.
Wen Zisong got angry at her and shouted, "Isn't it good to keep goats at home? When the ewe gives birth, wouldn't it be better to give the lambs to the uncles? Why give them to people with different surnames?"
"I'm willing!" Wen Yuxia only said three words, and Wen Zisong was completely dumbfounded.
The goat was caught by Wen Yuxia. Before the family divided their property, Wen Zisong, as her uncle, had control over the goat. Now that the family has separated, what right does Wen Zisong have to interfere in her family affairs?
A thought suddenly struck Wen Zisong: he and Wen Yuxia were from two different families, and his parents ate with her from the same pot. Surely she would listen to some of his parents' advice?
So, Wen Zisong turned his gaze to Wen Dashan, coughed twice, cleared his throat, and said, "Father, Da Ya said that half of the ewe's offspring should be given to the Wang family. I have no objection to that, but the other half should be left to me, my second brother, and my third brother."
Wen Zisong spoke with righteous indignation: if gifts are to be given, then everyone should be treated equally; Da Ya's uncles should get half, and Da Ya's paternal uncles and paternal aunts should also get a share.
Before Wen Dashan could speak, Wen Linshi, standing beside him, objected, "The lambs are to be divided among the three of you and the Wang family, but eldest son, don't even think about it... Your maternal grandparents' family must get a share."
Wen Zisong said unhappily, "Mother, we don't even know how many lambs the ewe will have this time. It's not too late for our maternal grandparents' family to wait until the ewe gives birth."
Goats typically give birth to 2-5 offspring. If the number is even, the Wen and Wang families can divide the spoils equally; if the number is odd, leaving one for the Lin family is fine. Wen Zisong's calculations were quite precise.
Wen Linshi was about to retort when Wen Dashan banged his pipe hard and shouted, "What's all the noise about? Is this the time to argue about who gets the lamb? Shut up, all of you!"
Seeing that Wen Linshi and Wen Zisong had stopped arguing, Wen Dashan turned to Wen Yuxia and said, "Da Ya, tell me why you gave the goat to the Wang family."
Wen Yuxia glanced at Wen Dashan, then at Wen Zisong who looked indignant, before slowly saying, "The mutton smell is strong. Our yard is small, and if we keep it at home, we'll probably have to smell it every day. What if... So I thought we should just send it to my maternal grandparents' house. No matter how strong the mutton smell is, we won't be able to smell it there."
Upon hearing this, Wen Zisong disagreed and said in a consultative tone, "We don't mind the smell of the sheep. Why don't you go and bring the sheep back now?"
Wen Yuxia rolled her eyes at him. "When I delivered it, I told my aunt to take good care of the ewe and the lamb. What do you mean by asking me to go and take the sheep now? Do you want me to break my promise to my aunt?"
"Besides, we've already separated our households. Do you understand? Once we've separated, we're two separate families. My family's affairs are none of your business, Uncle. The same goes for Second Uncle and Third Uncle. Go back!" Wen Yuxia's tone was gentle, but her words infuriated Wen Zisong.
"Fine, fine, fine, Da Ya, you've grown some guts, daring to talk back to me now," Wen Zisong said fiercely, pointing at Wen Yuxia.
Muttering to himself, "If I'd known Daya had a talent for hunting, I should have agreed to my father's request back then," Wen Zisong's eyes darted around before he spoke:
“Since ancient times, when families separate, parents have always lived with the eldest son. Back then, because my fourth brother and his wife had an accident, I felt sorry for Daya and Xiaoqi, so I agreed to let my parents temporarily live with the fourth branch of the family…”
Wen Dashan had intended for Wen Yuxia and her brother to live with the eldest son's family, but Wen Zisong refused. Therefore, Wen Dashan suggested that the elderly couple stay temporarily in the fourth branch of the family to take care of the siblings.
Now that Wen Yuxia can go hunting in the mountains to earn money, Wen Zisong, in order to control Wen Yuxia, is again considering raising the siblings in the eldest son's household.
As long as Wen Yuxia lived with the eldest son's wife, he wouldn't pursue the matter of the goats taken by the Wang family. With Wen Yuxia around, they could have as much prey as they wanted.
Wen Dashan knew his son's true character, and so did Wen Linshi. Thinking of his eldest son's grandsons, Wen Dashan decided to help him out.
This time, Da Ya and her siblings went hunting in the deep mountains with Zhang the hunter. Zhang the hunter said that Da Ya contributed the most effort. With Da Ya's help, the eldest son's grandsons might be able to go to school.
“Eldest son, Daya and Xiaoqi are still young and can’t live without your mother and me. Unless, unless you’re willing to let Daya and Xiaoqi live with the eldest son’s family,” Wen Dashan said, not even consulting Wen Yuxia, and directly joined forces with Wen Zisong.
Madam Wen chimed in, "It's good for the fourth and first wives to live together. When we two old folks pass away, there will be someone to take care of Daya and Xiaoqi."
While inwardly cursing Wen Zisong for being despicable, Wen Zibai also resented Wen Dashan and Wen Linshi for favoring the eldest son's family.
Wen Zihua was very anxious, afraid that Da Ya was too young and would be fooled by her older brother and parents. He kept giving Wen Yuxia meaningful glances, signaling her not to agree.
