Chapter 8 Fire Stone
Chapter 8 Fire Stone
Lezhi examined the strange plant in his hand repeatedly. It was about the size of a bottle cap, fiery red and crystalline, with sharp edges and corners, just like a beautiful ruby.
Judging from its appearance alone, Lezhi couldn't find any common ground between this thing and a plant. However, this world was different from before, perhaps with too many unknowns, so after much deliberation, Lezhi chose to trust his intuition.
After giving the flint to Lezhi, the flintball noticed that Lezhi was looking at it thoughtfully and guessed that Lezhi probably didn't know how to use it. So the flintball anxiously chirped twice, flapped its wings, and flew away from Lezhi's arms, hopping and skipping over the hay that Lezhi had collected earlier to signal to him.
"Well, what's wrong?"
Following the fluffy ball to the hay, Lezhi squatted down. All Lezhi saw was the fluffy ball hopping around in the hay, and then it gestured by touching the flint in its hand with the tip of its wing. Lezhi immediately understood what the fluffy ball meant.
"Hay, stones, um, you mean this stuff is used... to start a fire?"
Hesitantly, Yuezhi voiced her guess, then looked at Maoqiu with a puzzled expression.
Seemingly having finally heard the key word, Maoqiu affirmed loudly, while Xiao Heidou looked at Lezhi with bright eyes, as if urging him to try it quickly.
"Um, but how do you use this thing?"
Forget it. Lezhi decided to abandon her preconceived notions and try out how to use the flint as Maoqiu requested.
First, Lezhi tried the most primitive method of generating heat through friction. He took a stone and rubbed it with a flint, but the stone and flint did not generate any electricity, thus failing.
Meanwhile, Maoqiu, who was watching Lezhi's actions from the side, looked on with a look of utter disbelief. When he saw that Lezhi had progressed to the point of trying to soak the flint in water, Maoqiu helplessly stepped forward to stop Lezhi's actions.
Stopped by the fur ball, Lezhi looked at it innocently with a helpless expression, "Ah, is this not right either? Then how do I use it?"
When Lezhi arrived at a plant, Maoqiu gave him a vivid performance of pretending to be dead while mimicking the previous wailing "chirp chirp".
When Lezhi saw Maoqiu's series of actions, he suddenly had an epiphany.
"You're reenacting the time we discovered the shadowy figure, right?"
Upon hearing that Lezhi had accurately guessed what he was trying to say, Maoqiu flipped over and jumped up, hopping happily in front of Lezhi while pointing at Huoshi with the tips of its wings.
"Okay, okay, I understand what you mean."
Looking thoughtfully at the flint in his hand, Lezhi reassured the excited Maoqiu. Maoqiu's words were clear: it wanted Lezhi to absorb energy from the flint as it had done before.
Lezhi got up and went to the haystack. He tidied up the shape of the haystack and cleared the surrounding area before squatting down, holding a flint in his hand, and began to recall the energy flow trajectory that burst out in his body when he absorbed the shadow last time.
Having had the experience before, Lezhi quickly got the hang of it. Energy began to flow, and Lezhi immediately sensed a warm and fiery power from the flint in his hand, like pulling a ball of yarn. Lezhi pulled that heat from the flint and concentrated it in his hand.
At this point, all actions became purely instinctive. When the heat in his hands reached an unbearable level, Lezhi stopped absorbing energy from the flint and instinctively tried to release the incompatible power within his body.
So he reached out towards the haystack he had just prepared, thinking that he should release the energy as soon as possible. He saw a flame suddenly burst out of his hand and instantly ignite the haystack in front of him.
As the warmth in his hands dissipated, Lezhi stared blankly at the scene before him, somewhat incredulous, until the excited "cheep cheep" of the fur ball brought him back to his senses.
Ignoring her surprise, seeing that the pile of hay was about to burn out, Lezhi quickly brought over dry firewood to add fuel to the fire. Once the fire had stabilized, Lezhi energetically moved stones to build a makeshift hearth and carefully moved the fire inside.
After setting up the fire, Lezhi finally decided to try the insect meat he had saved earlier. He had been busy for so long, and his stomach was growling with hunger.
After taking out the insect meat and washing it briefly by the stream, Lezhi thought for a moment, then took out some scallion-flavored moss, crushed it with a stone, and spread it evenly on the meat to marinate it simply.
"Sigh, we're dirt poor, we'll just have to make do like this for now."
With a sigh of poverty, Lezhi cleaned another worm leg and worm meat. This time, he didn't marinate it. He wanted to see what the worm meat would taste like if cooked without seasoning, and he could also let Maoqiu try it.
He found a few branches of suitable thickness, cleaned them, and then skewered the meat onto the branches, making a simple barbecue skewer. He picked a few large, non-toxic leaves and placed them next to the fire to serve as containers. With everything ready, Lezhi took the prepared meat skewers to the fire and, relying on his intuition, began grilling the plain meat first.
Licked by the flames, the tender white insect meat quickly changed color, and a fragrant aroma filled the air. The furry creature, who had been waiting curiously nearby, couldn't resist the smell of the roasting meat and kept circling around Lezhi, even trying to sniff into the fire.
Fortunately, it seemed to know not to get too close to the fire, and before Lezhi could scold it, it moved away on its own when it felt the heat.
"Furry, don't worry, it'll be ready soon. You can eat first when it's done!"
"Chirp~"
Reassured by Lezhi, Maoqiu, though still anxious, obediently stood beside Lezhi and watched him grill meat.
Every now and then, Lezhi would turn the twig in his hand over to ensure the insect meat was heated evenly. Once he estimated it was almost done, he would carefully place the roasted meat on the leaves and fan it with his hand to help the temperature dissipate faster.
The little furball couldn't resist any longer and tried to bite it, but Lezhi, who was quick-witted and agile, stopped it.
"Oh my god, take it easy! They've just come out of the oven, aren't you afraid of getting burned?"
Sensing the worry in Lezhi's tone, Maoqiu looked at Lezhi with innocent eyes and pleaded. Lezhi helplessly ruffled Maoqiu's hair, at a loss for what to do. After thinking for a moment, Lezhi took the sharp stone slab she had used to cut the insect meat earlier and began to slice the cooked insect meat.
The roasted insect meat was easier to cut than the raw kind. Lezhi held down the skewer with one hand and used the stone slab in the other to easily cut off a piece of meat. The internal texture of the meat had already changed color. Seeing that the temperature was about right, Lezhi handed the piece of meat to Maoqiu, who was eagerly waiting nearby.
"Here, try it and see if you like it."
"Chirp chirp~ Chirp~"
The furry ball, which had been intently watching Lezhi's movements, jumped up and down with joy when it saw Lezhi give it the first piece of meat. Then it opened its mouth, grabbed the piece of meat that was its own, put it aside, and began to peck at it. It seemed to be very satisfied with the taste of the roasted insect meat, making a melodious chirping sound with each bite, its joy evident.
Seeing that Maoqiu had started eating, Lezhi no longer hesitated, quickly cut off another piece, picked it up with her hand, and put it in her mouth.
"No~"
good to eat!
With wide, surprised eyes, Lezhi looked at the insect meat before her, her eyes filled with admiration. Tender, smooth, and juicy, the insect meat itself tasted exceptional even without any seasoning.
