Chapter 67 What to do about food poisoning?
Linni gave him a strange look: How did he go from a hyperactive big boy to a shy little boy again? Although she felt it was strange, she nodded: "Stop spinning around and don't toss me up."
"Yes!" He nodded heavily, carefully and steadily picked her up, nodded to Yao, and then strode forward steadily.
After returning home and taking care of her personal needs, Lin Ni retrieved a small leather crossbody bag she had made earlier. She packed the seasonings and folding knife she had brought from the original world inside and went with Yao and Bai Ji to the foot of the mountain where salt was being collected. Only a dozen or so people remained to collect salt, and Hui was still at the very back of the line. As Lin Ni approached, Hui greeted her happily, "Lin, you're here! I thought you weren't collecting salt today."
Linni smiled at her: "Since you're here, of course you should follow along!"
Hui turned to Bai's left and looked around: "Huh, where is it?"
Seeing her strange expression, Lin Ni couldn't help but ask, "Hui, what's wrong?"
Hui squeezed next to her and said, "I thought you two were in a hurry to go back and get married!"
Linni blushed deeply, especially in broad daylight! "You're overthinking it!"
Hui chuckled: "You already have three partners, what are you still shy about!"
Linni, a little embarrassed and angry, grabbed her left hand and said, "What about you? You have five partners now, so you must be incredibly busy every day?"
Hui wasn't shy at all: "What are you busy with? We're not in heat right now, what's there to be busy about?"
Heat cycle? What the heck?
As they were talking, it was their turn to collect salt. After Hui received her salt, she made an appointment with Lin Ni to go to the back mountain to collect salt the next morning. Lin Ni had never been before, so she readily agreed.
Bai helped Mei carry the remaining salt back to the salt mountain. Lin Ni followed and saw a cave not far from the salt distribution area. Four high-ranking males guarded the entrance, but it was too dark inside for her to see clearly. After packing up, they went to Mei's cave together.
Mei's cave was located on a mountain directly opposite the plaza to the west. Her cave was quite large; the front was where she cooked, ate, and held meetings—her partner was the chieftain, and many orcs came and went daily. So, she dug a smaller cave at the back, which was where she and her companions rested, somewhat like a private room and living room. Besides Yang, Mei's two partners were also in the cave. They had prepared a sumptuous lunch: roasted meat, boiled meat soup, and various fruits. Linni even noticed several eggs of different sizes among the food.
Bai seemed particularly shy when he saw Yang, and only called out "Father!" before staying by Lin Ni's side without saying a word.
Yang scrutinized Bai intently for a while before nodding in satisfaction and saying, "Good, very good!" He then looked up at Lin Ni and smiled, "We've all heard about it, thank you!"
Linni was a little awkward. This was her first meal with her elders since arriving in the beastman world; this should be considered a formal meeting with the parents, right? Leaving aside whether she wanted to marry Bai—it seemed she had already decided to accept them if they could become human, and she had also said she wouldn't abandon them. Saying she wouldn't accept them now seemed impossible. And she was already married to their eldest son, Feng—wasn't this a bit like the legendary brother-sharing of a wife?
Linni was lost in thought when Li arrived, making her even more embarrassed. Li came alone and sat down directly next to Mei: "Now you're finally relieved, aren't you?"
In the beastman continent, females typically give birth to one or two cubs per litter, with three being considered a lot (just like in the human world). There are many male siblings, but females are already rare, and female siblings are even rarer. What's rare is that these female siblings not only share a common bloodline, but all of them have successfully reached adulthood, so their bond is exceptionally deep. Mei saw Li and felt a pang of sadness, suppressing the tears welling in her eyes. She nodded and said, "Yes, I'm truly relieved!"
Mei turned and warmly invited Linni and Yao to sit down and eat. Their barbecue and broth were poorly cooked, too gamey and dry, but with so many people, Linni felt embarrassed to use her own seasonings. Mei enthusiastically recommended her favorite dish to Linni: pouring raw eggs over sizzling barbecue. She and Li both thought it had a unique flavor.
Linni couldn't stand the slippery texture; after taking a bite, she handed it to Bai. However, she did want to eat an egg; she had never eaten one on the Beastman Continent. After asking Mei, she had Yao wash a smaller egg and put it in a stone pot to boil.
The group was enjoying their meal when a man rushed over, shouting, "Mei, help! Huang is dying!"
Upon hearing this, everyone stood up nervously, and Mei said anxiously, "I'll go take a look!" Then she ran off with the male.
Li said to Linni, "Huang is a beautiful female cub, let's go take a look together."
Lin Ni could only nod and follow along with Yao and Bai.
Huang and Mei lived on the other side of the same mountain. When the group arrived, they saw a woman with wheat-colored skin lying on the ground, foaming at the mouth and with her eyes rolled back. Lin Ni was startled; this was a very serious situation!
Mei paced anxiously to the side, asking, "How could this happen? What happened?!"
The male who was already in the cave said, "We don't know either. She was eating when she suddenly became like this!"
"How could eating food cause this?!" Mei rushed to help Huang up. "Huang, are you alright? Answer your mother!"
Seeing that she didn't seem to be choking, Lin Ni glanced at the overturned stone bowl beside her and saw several kinds of mushrooms and chunks of meat inside. Could she have eaten poisonous mushrooms? So she asked, "Is this what she just ate?"
The man said, "Yes."
Mei and Li both turned their heads to look, and when they saw the food inside, Mei angrily scolded, "How could you eat these poisonous herbs again! Didn't I tell you not to eat them? Last time you ate them and had diarrhea for days, how dare you eat them again!"
The man who notified them to come downstairs lowered his head and said, "I saw it on the way back after praying today. Huang said he just likes to eat it and he's not afraid of getting diarrhea..."
"Is this how you take care of Huang? You know she shouldn't eat it, yet you still give it to her!" Mei shouted angrily.
Lin Ni thought about the rain that had fallen for the past two nights, and wondered if these were newly sprouted mushrooms from the mountain. She wanted to eat them too, but she needed to find ones that weren't poisonous. Seeing that Mei was about to scold her, Lin Ni quickly persuaded her, "Mei, now is not the time to scold. We need to think of a way to save Huang."
With tears in her eyes and a hint of despair in her voice, she said, "How can I save her? I don't know how. She ate the poisonous herb; we can only wait for her to pull through!"
Linni: Is your physique that strong? No wonder there are so few females!
